April 23rd in England is St George’s Day, which celebrates the nation’s patron saint. It is also the birthday of William Shakespeare, the nation’s greatest writer. St George is said to have been a Roman soldier from the Middle East. He was martyred for his Christian faith in the third century and seems to have had no links with England whatsoever!
